VIT University was established under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, and was founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution called the Vellore Engineering College. The Union Ministry of HRD conferred University status on Vellore Engineering College in 2001. The University is headed by its founder, Dr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister of Tamil Nadu. In recognition of his services to India in offering world class education, he was awarded honorary doctorate by the West Virginia University, USA. Sankar Viswanathan, Sekar Viswanathan and G.V. Selvam are the Vice-Presidents; Dr. Anand A. Samuel is the Vice-Chancellor and Dr. S. Narayanan is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
VIT campus is spread across 250 acres of area. It has a well- planned and comprehensive infrastructure provided for both students and faculty. Equipped labs decorate every building in the University with over 55 servers to manage data transmissions. Moreover, the university has features that support all kinds of events - Auditoriums, plush open spaces, outdoor stages and much more. o achieve a healthier lifestyle while coping with the pressures of studying, one needs to be healthy both emotionally and physically. VIT University is structured around 13 schools of study. A student should register in one of the schools, depending on the degree he/she is interested in pursuing.
Research centers are also part of the schools, encouraging inter-departmental collaboration and opportunity for students to participate in research projects. The university offers 27 UG Courses, 30 PG Courses, 4 Integrated Programmes and 4 Research programmes. In addition to full-time/part-time Ph.D., M.S. Degrees in Engineering and Management Disciplines, M.Phil, Ph.D., in Science, Integrated Ph.D. programmes are offered for engineering disciplines in various schools. Riviera is VIT University’s ISO certified International Sports and Cultural Carnival. This festival is an endeavour to provide a platform to all individuals to showcase their skills and develop their potential via arts, sports, music, drama, debate, dance or fashion.
The most highly sought after B.Tech degrees from VIT are achieved by successfully getting through the VITEEE examination. The students based on their merit are given a range of options to pursue their UG degree. The Institution currently offers 36 UG programmes including B.Arch degree (5 years) programme for students willing to pursue Architecture. The admission into the B.Arch degree is procured through NATA score. In the post-graduation programme (M.Tech) students are allowed to pursue the course of their choice from one of the 7 schools of VIT. The entry into these programmes occurs by successfully getting through the VITMEE examination conducted every year.
